The Inertia

Portugal is a land of plenty. Plenty of waves. Plenty of culture. Plenty of amazing food, plenty of amazing people. It’s hard not to fall in love with the place, and Nic von Rupp knows that from experience.

He is, of course, from Portugal, but it’s easy to be blind to the wonders of a place you grew up in. Nic’s been on a tour of his country he calls “Portugal Back to Back.” In the series, he explores not only the waves, but everything else surrounding them. In his latest episode, he headed to Madeira Island, one of Earth’s most beautiful places.

“What an incredible Jewel this island is,” he says. “With world class right handers that break perfect from three-foot to 30-foot, this is why some even call it the Hawaii of Europe.”

On this trip, he was joined by Vasco Ribeiro, Martim Fortes, and the prestigious local surfer Orlando Pereira. And they scored some of the best waves the series has shown yet.
