Ben Gravy was faced with a problem 99 percent of all surfers in the world will never face. Most of the time, we plebeians are stuck at our lackluster home breaks, watching videos and reading stories of pros traveling to the best waves in the world. Meanwhile, Gravy was on the European trip of a lifetime and pining after waves in New Jersey.
Vlogging from a trip to Venice, Italy, Ben Gravy recounts a case of serious FOMO he’s caught as a result of texts and calls from friends back home about the swell that hit the East Coast due to Hurricane Franklin. According to Gravy’s contact list, it’s the swell of the year. However, Ben does some of his own amateur meteorology in order to allay his guilt over missing waves back home.
“I know exactly what it looks like,” says Gravy “Sure it’s really, really fun, but it’s not the swell of the year. However, somehow in the back of my mind, because I’m stuck in Venice, being a tourist, I’ve convinced myself this is the swell of the year.” Somehow he did seem to briefly consider hopping on a plane back to the United States, but in the end came to pretty much the only sane conclusion there is to make: stay on your Italian vacation.
