Matt Bromley has made a career out of surfing enormous waves. It’s impossible to do such a thing without enduring enormous wipeouts — take wipeouts at Pipeline, Maverick’s, and an outer bombie off Nias as examples — but the sweet ain’t so sweet without those sours. And the wave you see here was definitely sweet.
Shot at Mullaghmore, this single clip is part of a film called Awaken, which is a good use of half an hour. Shot over the course of four years, Awaken follows Oli Adams, Taz Knight, Noah Lane, Gearoid Mcdaid, Conor Maguire, and a handful of others like Bromley as they search the wild North Atlantic for the heaviest waves they can find. This particular wave most certainly was one of them, and seeing it in slow motion shows just how much skill is involved when one attempts to wrangle a big one at Mullaghmore.
