Well, it’s Puerto season, a time surfers like Nate Florence wait for all year. When Pipe season begins to wind down, Puerto is just warming up. It’s got to be a nice thing for surfers like Nate — surfers who live and breathe big waves and big barrels — to have a constant seasonal back and forth from massive tube to massive tube.
It can be very easy for the casual viewer to watch GoPro footage from the lineup and think, “hey, I could do that.” But when the camera is pulled back to the beach view, that viewer is made aware of just how heavy Puerto Escondido can get.
With Nate’s YouTube style of just uploading raw clips sliced together with little-to-no editing, we get to see a lot of the in-between moments where the surfers are just waiting. That’s a lot of what surfing is, but it’s interesting to see how calm Nate, Ivan Florence, and surfers like Puerto veteran Coco Nogales are when they’re waiting to surf waves that would kill 99 percent of the average surfers out there.
