Whatever you want to call it, that’s a lot of spinning around in the air on a surfboard. Photos: Instagram//Screenshots
Wave pools are wildly good training grounds for surfing. No matter your stance on them, it’s impossible to deny that the existence of repeatable, predictable waves created to do specific things are pushing surfing to new heights. Literally, when it comes to aerial surfing. The latest example? Italo Ferreira’s first 720.
He did it at at the São Paulo Surf Club, a relatively new joint in Brazil that was built by PerfectSwell and the Brazilian real estate development company JHSF. As is generally the case with surfing, there’s almost surely going to be some kind of debate on whether this is a real 720. There sure was way back in 2014 when Kelly Slater did something similar in New York. Whatever the case may be, I’m sure that we can all agree that spinning that many times on a surfboard in the air is… not easy.
It’s a good place to keep on one’s toes as the tour is on break – and Ferreira isn’t wasting any time getting ready for 2026.
