Jordy Smith surfing with a DJI Osmo 360

The Inertia

Surfing video games have never been all that great. Remember Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer? Didn’t hold a candle to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, right? I think that’s because it’s easier for video game developers to create a static landscape than a fluid one — and surfing takes place in a (literally) fluid landscape. But Jordy Smith recently took a DJI Osmo 360 into funnelling tubes, and the footage looks like something out of the best surfing video game ever.

Smith was joined by Dale Staples for this particular session, and they captured themselves in high-def inside some very deep tubes. The DJI Osmo 360 is a 360 degree camera with dual one-inch-type sensors that are capable of recording up to 8K/50fps video, so the visuals are strange and stunning. Note the invisible selfie-stick, because visible selfie sticks are just the worst.
