Two surfers at Uluwatu

The Inertia

Uluwatu is one of the world’s most famous waves for a good reason: it’s really, really good. Of course, it’s not always good. Such is the nature of waves — in the ocean, anyway — but when it’s on, it is on. And recently, it was nothing if not that.

It’s a little deceiving, however. When it’s this size, it’s not an easy place to surf, but if you can wrangle just one good one, you’re going to be talking about it for the rest of your life. You know those waves, right? Hopefully you’ve had at least one. A wave that’s burned in your memory from start to finish. A wave that was so good you think that maybe, just maybe, you’ve hyped it up in your own mind. But even if you did, that’s okay. Remember it the way you want to remember it.

And hopefully if you’re surfing Uluwatu, someone like Surfers of Bali is filming so you can have it burned into more than your memory.
