Expectations? What expectations. The most dominant female halfpipe rider in a generation continued her winning ways, capturing halfpipe gold in South Korea. China’s Liu Jiayu took silver followed by Steamboat Springs, Colorado’s Arielle Gold.
The Toyota sponsorship and all the accolades didn’t matter. Kim laid down a heavy run on her opening try: she stuck a backside air, frontside 1080, cab 720, frontside 900, McTwist and frontside inverted 720. She landed two 1080s on her victory lap as the damage had been done. The field had failed to catch her.
If there was any pressure, Kim never showed it on her way to a dominant win. Five-time Olympian Kelly Clark finished fourth. The halfpipe finals are airing now on NBC.
