Joe Turpel is a supremely nice person. In fact, the only negative thing you’ll ever hear about the guy usually comes from some cranky, sweaty internet commenter in stained sweatpants, violently complaining about Joe’s voice from behind their screens, Cheeto dust flying from their fingertips as they smash their keyboard. They’ve never met Joe.
Joe Turpel remains unfazed in the face of that sweaty commenter, because he is a cool, calm, collected professional. Shit, remember the time he called Mick Fanning’s shark attack? “A little splash,” he said. “Looks like Fanning needs some assistance.” Cool as a cucumber, Joe.
Like many who make their living with their vocal cords, Turpel has some previous experience using them. He was the lead singer in a Redondo beach psuedo-punk band called Lun. Here’s a quick warning to the cranky, sweaty internet commenters: if you don’t like Joe’s voice, don’t watch the video above. Then you’ll have nothing to be upset about, you can finally get around to washing those sweatpants, and we can all go on with our lives.
Along with Kevin Olson on guitar, Luis Phillips on drums, and Nick Hess on bass, Joe spent a few years trying to make a living off of music. Although it never really panned out, the group did make a few bucks here and there, which is more than most aspiring musicians can say. And now we get to see a 19-year-old Joe Turpel wailing away about “doing what you love, loving what you do.” He’s probably a bit embarrassed–it is, after all, the equivalent of your mum pulling out the baby pictures on a first date. And it’s awesome!
