The Inertia

If you’re a fan of professional surfing, it’s very likely that you have feelings about Kelly’s pool. Good feelings or bad feelings, most likely. Judging by comment boards — which, admittedly, are not the best way to judge things — there is almost nobody on the fence. You love the pool or you hate it. When the World Surf League announced that the Surf Ranch was officially a tour stop, those feelings were amplified.

The 2018 Surf Ranch Pro was something new in surfing. With Mother Nature’s vagaries thrown by the wayside, all the randomness of surfing was gone. Surfers knew the when, where, and hows of the wave they were riding. “They had to perform, on time, and under pressure,” wrote the WSL. “No wonder then it was surfing’s most pressure-resistant surfers, Gabriel Medina and Carissa Moore, who came out on top.”

Above is a highlight reel from the event, featuring surfing from Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Julian Wilson, Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore, Lakey Peterson, Stephanie Gilmore, Griffin Colapinto, Owen Wright, Yago Dora, Kanoa Igarashi, and Sebastian Zeitz.
