Hear that? That’s the sound of Brazilian Storm surf groupies bemoaning the loss of their dreamy World Champion.
In an Instagram post from last week, Adriano de Souza announced his marriage through civil ceremony to his model girlfriend, Patricia Eicke. The actual wedding ceremony is scheduled for late January.
“Status = Married,” Adriano wrote. “Today I signed the contract hardest in my life [sic] I’m not a single man.”
The photo shows the two lovebirds sharing their first kiss as a married couple, sans the altar and hordes of champagne-sudsy family and friends. But on the desk there’s the (alleged) legal documents binding them together. If you notice, Adriano has one hand in his pocket and his comment wasn’t exactly an endearing love letter. Maybe this isn’t the happiest day of his life?
As we all know, that day came when he beat out the competition, Mick Fanning included, and won his first World Title. It was an incredibly emotional achievement for the 28-year-old Brazilian after ten years of ups and downs on the Tour. And adding to the heartache and stress, his good friend Ricardo dos Santos was fatally shot earlier in the year. De Souza dedicated his big win to his fallen brother.
But this year is off to a good start for Adriano, so it would seem, with this happy union. Back in 2012, Patricia made a loving video compilation featuring photos of the couple. He’ll join Julian Wilson as the latest World Tour surfer with an old lady. But will the ball and chain sink their competitive drive or ignite it? We’ll have to wait and see.
