Anyone who has ever surfed Punta Roca in El Salvador knows that you have to negotiate a submerged boulder near the top of the point. The rock is so infamous and – depending on the tide and swell – so blatantly in the way that the locals have given the rock a name. They call it “Mama Roca.”

Mama Roca is not a huge issue if the tide is high enough. But it particularly becomes a problem when it’s barely hidden under a thin layer of water. When Brisa Hennessy was freesurfing during the rising tide this morning at the Surf City El Salvador Pro, she was given a scare when she dangerously struck the rock with her fin.

The fin was pushed through the deck of her board as she was knocked off balance. Luckily, the damage was just to the board and not her body.

“That’s good luck, right?” Hennessy joked after reviewing the footage to see what happened. “(The rock) wasn’t there!”

Future Fins joined in on the comment section and said, “You should see the other guy.”

Hennessy certainly won’t be making that mistake again. You can bet next time she’ll draw a higher line when passing through the Mama Roca zone. She’s slotted to square off against Molly Picklum in the women’s quarterfinals when competition gets back underway.
