The Inertia

Britt Merrick, the lead designer at Channel Islands, has had his fingers in the foam of a lot of surfboards. As one might expect with a person so involved in the business of making surfboards, his board of choice changes often. Right now, it’s a model called the Happy that’s making its way under the feet of a lot of surfers.

It’s a regular shortboard model that was made for surfers who want one model they can simply scale up or down, depending on wave size. “What we’ve learned from our R&D on the Happy is that its foam forward design helped us reach our goal of seamlessly scaling the same model to step-up dimensions—especially with round tail—without any hiccups,” Channel Islands wrote.

Britt, along with team manager Nathaniel Curran, recently took a few boards to the Surf Ranch, which is a pretty damn good place to do R & D.
