“What better way to maximize the day than by going for a downwind run?” Cash Berzolla asked from inside his garage. Outside, Tropical Storm/Hurricane Lala was bearing down, and Berzolla was sick. But Berzolla is not a guy who can sit for too long. He is a guy who does things. And what he does best is foiling.
Berzolla, who was the star of The Inertia‘s recent installment of Sessions, is quickly becoming one of the most impressive foilers in the world. The way he rides waves is a glimpse into the future of wave riding. He’s so far ahead of the game that it’s hard to believe his exploits are real.
The 20-year-old grew up on Maui, using the wind and the waves as his playground. It shows, too. There aren’t too many people who would look at an incoming storm of Lala’s strength and think to themselves, “I should go and downwind that.”
But Cash did. “It’s gusting 50 knots,” he said. “So either… no, it’s going to be victory at sea, to say the least, but hopefully it’s at least a little bit organized and we can have some fun on the water.”
After a very slippery trek, Berzolla and his partners found themselves in the middle of a maelstrom. Berzolla managed to chip into one early, but soon fell. Luckily, Finn Spencer was up and riding and (hopefully) had no use for his paddle, so he dropped it off on his way by. And then it was on.
For the next few hours, they pumped and cruised their way through a wild ocean. And when they finally made it back to land, Berzolla was definitely able to say he had some fun.
