The Inertia

Editor’s Note: This feature is presented by our partners at Armstrong Foils.

When most people think of wing foiling, they probably envision old windsurfers that have been re-birthed thanks to the popularity of the foil, moving steadily across an open expanse of water holding a quasi sail, rarely turning or doing anything that resembles performance. They probably haven’t been to the Hatchery on the Columbia River on a windy July afternoon and witnessed the indescribable aerial antics. Or seen the intensity of wing foiling at Jaws. Maybe they haven’t had the chance to witness the brilliance of Cash Berzolla, tearing apart a wind-strewn wave on Maui that culminates on a lava-rock lined shore.

Because that, my friends, is surfing on steroids. And this is Cash personified. The 20-year-old grew up on the Valley Isle, and as you’ll see above, is a compact, powerful surfer with excellent technique. Throw in the wing and his control of the wind and you have something, well, otherworldly, really.

If you haven’t been here before, welcome to SESSIONS, our series where we follow a single surfer around their home break to get a little piece of what drives them. Mostly, it’s the same thing that drives you: riding waves. That’s it, that’s all. No BS.

And while a foil session on Maui is a little bit different than our normal episode, Cash’s control of the elements makes him a damn fine watch.
