The Inertia

As far as surfing in Santa Cruz goes, there’s a ton to explore and even more to learn about. The town of Santa Cruz has a rich surfing history. It’s the first landing point for the sport in California when, in 1885, three Hawaiian princes visited Santa Cruz and, seeing waves, shaped boards out of local redwood and paddled out into the frigid waters. Many years later, Santa Cruz local Jack O’Neill would design the first wetsuit for surfing, and his son, Pat, would help invent the surf leash.

With iconic breaks such as Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point, as well as countless other nooks and crannies both in and outside of town, Santa Cruz is a cold-water heaven. Follow along with Lex Weinstein and Hunter Jones as they team up with Santa Cruz local Noah Wegrich to explore all that the iconic surf town has to offer in the WSL’s (De)Tour YouTube series.
