On Thursday morning, international man of heavy water, Garrett McNamara went down on a bomb at Maverick’s. The wipeout that ensued was horrific, almost cartoon-like. It appeared that G-Mac needed an extra paddle or two as he scraped his way into this behemoth, resulting in him hanging high on the lip. Then…wooosh. He shot down the face of the wave like he was riding a bucking bronco, struggling to hold on. The Massachusetts-born big wave icon ultimately fell, skipping down the face like a stone on a lake. After which, he was rushed to the hospital with a dislocated shoulder (like Mark Matthews recently at Jaws). But G-Mac is damn tough. We just hope he’ll be back if/when they run the Titans of Maverick’s contest.
