In the run up to the 2020 Olympics in Japan, rumor and innuendo of an artificial wave hosting the surf contest have been plentiful. Jamie Tierney, a longtime contributor to The Inertia, even took a tour of a proposed site for a new wave there. But it didn’t even look close to ready. ISA President Fernando Aguerre also took to the airwaves last year to quell rumors that the Olympic surf event would be held in an artificial wave.
But that hasn’t stopped Japanese surfers from training and playing in an artificial facility in Tokyo called Citywave, based off the facilities already in operation in Europe. The wave has operated as a training ground of sorts as it’s adjustable to cater to beginners and experts. Not to mention the marketing promos coming out of Citywave Tokyo makes night surfing look like a full-on club scene after dark. Which isn’t a bad thing at all. We’re all about glow sticks, DJs, and surfing to a beat.
Here’s more surf rave footage, if you’re feeling it.
