This whole wave pool madness seems like it happened overnight, doesn’t it? One day they were more the fodder future surfing dystopian dreams (or utopia, depending on your stance), the next we woke up and they were popping up everywhere.
Of course, that’s not actually what happened. But the speed in which new projects and new technologies have popped up in the past few years makes it all seem like a blur. For decades, innovative people worked to make man made waves readily available. The only real difference between those older pursuits and what we’re seeing now is that today’s product is financially viable for offering to the masses. One such pool before the modern boom is an actual desert mirage in Dubai. Back in 2012, Dion Agius dropped some jaws with a short film called ELECTRIC BLUE HEAVEN. At the time Globe declared it the world’s best wave pool. Shortly after, Chippa Wilson and Jack Freestone entered those same gates and gave us more wave pool content, which you see here.
Boy, we had no idea what was waiting for us through the rest of the decade.
