The Inertia

When a big swell hits Jaws, it’s not a place to be trifled with. It’s a wave perfectly suited for a giant person. For a normal-sized human it’s a tad big. But people like Kai Lenny wouldn’t have it any other way. He lives for those big days at Jaws; waits patiently all year for the first swell to hit. Watches the conditions intently and trains on a variety of different craft so he’s ready for whatever ends up on his plate. And on this particular day, there was a lot on that plate. Big waves. Errant surfboards. Tomahawk wipeouts and party wave barrels. And of course, other human beings.

“Late afternoon is always notorious for big sets out at Pe’ahi, a.k.a Jaws,” he wrote. “Most of the time everyone gets caught inside. But sometimes someone will be in the spot to go!”

Tucker Wooding was on the drone, Slater Neborsky and Marcus Rodrigues of MROD MAUI were filming from land, and Marc Chambers was covering the water angle in the edit you see above.
