The Inertia

Kelly Slater is a lot of things. The world’s most famous surfer is the first thing that comes to mind. Jimmy Slade from Baywatch should be the second. Businessman, Instagram disturber, wave pool creator… he’s a lot of things. But lower on the list of things the non-surfing public might not know about him is the fact that he’s a good golfer. A great golfer. “Great”, of course, is relative, and since Kelly routinely golfs with the world’s best golfers (and Presidents, too) he probably wouldn’t call himself one. A few years ago, back in 2017, he told the PGA Tour that he plays about 150 rounds a year. In 2015, he played to a three-handicap in the 2015 AT&T tournament. In 2018, he won The Arnie, touted as “Golf Digest’s highest honor.” So yeah, “great” is the proper term.

He’s good enough to have a camera pointed at him as he goes through his golf bag. Golf is a funny thing. Much like surfing, as one gets better, equipment matters more. Kelly has put years of research into his game, breaking down the fundamentals and honing them into the sharpened blade that they’ve become. In that time, he’s built a bag full of clubs that suits his game in particular. In the episode of Fair Game: What’s In the Bag you see above, Kelly takes Adam Scott through the clubs he’s currently gaming the mindful intention behind each one.
