The Inertia

If you were to ask 100 people in California to list 10 things about Newport Beach, the Wedge and 4th of July would be on every single list. Bet on that. Anytime the wave turns on with a significant swell there are news vans lined up along the Balboa peninsula neighborhood, showcasing the turnout on the beach as bombs detonate on the sand. Meanwhile, Newport Beach might as well be the corporate headquarters for America’s Independence Day and the excessive amount of partying it invites. It’s America, the City-Sized Frat Party, fully decorated with red, white, and blue flags flying from every electric golf cart in town.

July 5th, on the other hand, is a national day of hangovers. America wakes up groaning and grasping for Gatorade. And strenuous physical activity is not on the to-do list of many. But there were waves waiting for the disciplined and sober few at the Wedge this July 5th.
