Pavones is widely known as the world’s second-longest wave. Chicama in Peru is number one, as you likely know, but when a wave is as long as Pavones was in mid-April, it really doesn’t matter all that much.
The video you see here was shot over the course of three days, April 11, 12, 13, and features Malakai Martinez, Tiago Carrique, and Leilani McGonagle. Those names might not ring a bell for the casual surf fan, but all three are — as you can see here — fantastic surfers. All three are QS surfers, and Martinez and McGonagle are from Costa Rica, so they know Pavones well. Tiago Carrique surfs for France but was born in Costa Rica, so he too knows the wave well.
Pavones can run for nearly a half mile when things are working well, and on those three days in April, things were definitely working well.
