In the 10 years since Rob Machado teamed up with Firewire, his user-friendly models, like the Seaside and Machadocado, have steadily infiltrated lineups across California (and beyond). Now, after years of shaping longboards for his daughter Macy, he’s turned his experience into a new Firewire model in his collection, the Macy-Boo.
The Macy-Boo is a traditional noserider style log available in 9’3’’ and 9’6’’, retailing for $1,390 and $1,450, respectively. Machado describes its features as “single concave under the nose, a rolled belly through the middle feeding into vee through the back section, and a flipped tail rocker for nose riding.” He says the shape takes inspiration from Donald Takayama, Skip Frye, Ryan Burch, and Hansen Surfboards.
“Logs have been in my life from way back. I live right in front of Cardiff Reef and I’m surrounded by some of the best loggers in the world,” Machado wrote on the product page. “Tudor, Burch…I’m blessed to be surrounded by such amazing surfboard builders that have inspired me to ride all different types of surfboards and experience an abundance of feelings of wave riding.”
Macy, 22, who lives in Reunion Island, played a role in working out the board’s contours with her dad, basing it off a board she saw her grandfather holding in an old photo.
“The outline is pretty wide, but the rails are pretty thin compared to other longboards that tend to be very thick in the middle to facilitate the noserides,” Macy said.
The pair also released a 10-inch fin to slot in the board. Rob said he relied on Macy to come up with the design.
“We made it at 10 (inches) because it’s a good in-between for turns and noserides with this shape,” Macy said. The large base, she says, helps with noseriding, while the thinner end of the fin facilitates turns.
