Sage Burke surfing Maverick's left

The Inertia

Maverick’s, the very famous big wave in California that the surfing world loves so much, is generally thought of as a right. But most rights sometimes have a left on them, and Maverick’s is no different. There aren’t too many surfers that are into it, though, because the left is a little shorter and a little less forgiving (as if any wave at Maverick’s is forgiving). Over the years, a few notables have gone left on the right, and Sage Burke wanted to add his name to that relatively short list.

“My goal for this trip is to pull into a Maverick’s left and try to get barreled,” he said. “I want to put my name in the hat of the select few that have done that.”

Burke knows the wave at Half Moon Bay well. He’s been going there for almost a decade now, but he had never attempted the left. “That left is terrifying,” he continued. “There’s an anxiety that’s always been there, but that’s slowly starting to turn into an excitement. The feeling hasn’t changed, but the way I see it has.”

It wasn’t the biggest day in the world at Mav’s, but Burke did what he went there to do. With his feet firmly in the wax now, he’s likely to do it again.

“The potential of what we could do out there is so high,” he said. “The ceiling’s very high out there. I just want to keep showing up and putting in the time. At the end of the day, you don’t want to live with regrets… the next time we go out there, hopefully it’s twice the size and offshore.
