The Inertia

Tim Bonython makes it his business to be wherever the big waves are. Whether it’s opening day at Jaws, mayhem at Solander, or titanic swells at Mullaghmore, he’s inevitably on site, camera in hand. Of course, that also means he’s a regular at the most famous big wave of them all: Nazaré.

“Here we are at the home of the world’ biggest ridable wave, Nazaré,” says Bonython at the top of his latest video, posted to his YouTube channel, Surfing Visions. “We got a big day. It’s not the biggest ever, the swell direction is more west than it should be. Northwest is what we’re looking for, but all the same, there’s some huge waves.”

Of course, “A big day, not the biggest ever,” vastly underplays the significance of these waves. As Bonython’s lens artfully captures, even suboptimal Nazaré is a sight to behold. The video heavily features Guinness World Record holder Sebastian Steudtner, along with a few other daredevils and the 20,000 or so spectators who packed in to Praia Do Norte to watch the show.
