The Inertia

It’s summer across the Northern Hemisphere – and between heat waves in Europe, the U.S., and beyond, pleasant memories of cooler temps may be dancing like sugar plums in your head.

So, in service of that dream, we present to you a short that’s bound to cool you off, if not cause a vicarious ice cream headache to set in.

Meet Dan, an ordinary surfer who calls the shores of Lake Superior home. The stoke that fuels Dan’s pursuit of surf is the same that fuels every surfer on the planet. The obstacles he faces to get a few waves, though? Anything but ordinary. Think sub-zero temperatures, chunks of ice churning in the channel that could wreak havoc on fiberglass or a frozen face, and you start to get a sense of what Dan goes through any time there’s a promising forecast in the dead of winter.

The above is a striking portrait of a man who personifies the next-level commitment required to surf the Great Lakes – who, without question, are the cruelest of mistresses.
