Welcome to Sterling Spencer’s latest spectacle, GOLD. You can watch it here here.
Half man, half horse. That’s the surfing community’s very own centaur, Sterling Spencer. He’s a selfie-taking, e-cig-smoking, celebrity-schmoozing surfer from Gulf Breeze, Florida. What once was a promising surf career soon morphed into a weird and beautiful, comical and absurd social media presence. But if you look closely, weeding through the hilarious audio-dubbed clips and Rob Machado selfies, you’ll find that Sterling still shreds…hard.
His latest full-length film is years in the making. Gold is like a white-boy rap video meets a don’t-take-yourself-seriously surf clip. It’s like a normal surf video, but on drugs…the fun kind. It’s like a looney look inside the mind of surfing’s biggest character. Sterling Spencer may not be the world’s greatest surfer, although he would beg to differ, but he’s definitely having the most fun.
And aside from the side-splitting comedy, the film features the likes of Rob Machado, Dillon Perillo, Dylan Graves, Jack Johnson, and the inimitable Bob Saget!
But behind the Instagram comedy and the thick-rimmed spectacles (sorta like the surf world’s Austin Powers), there’s another side to Sterling. On his website, he wrote this:
Welcome to my movie GOLD! I made this for YOU to enjoy and share with your friends. If there is one thing I would hope you take from this film, it’s to make the most out of your life by choosing happiness and remember to not take things so seriously. We are all the Number 1 Surfer.
Through the journey of this film I almost took my own life due to a downward spiral of events that broke my spirit. I have been secretly battling depression for years and almost gave in. Humor and loved ones brought me back to life, and I am now happier than I ever have been before.
When I started this film my goal wasn’t to make a heap of money as a payoff, instead I have the option for you to donate to my GoFundMe. This will help me with future projects to give back in a cool way that you can follow on my instagram. If you aren’t able to make a donation, all I ask of you is to share this film and to keep the stoke alive. Thanks for watching!
So long as you have a smile on your face and you keep making us laugh via social media and projects like GOLD, we’re with you, Sterling!
