The Inertia

The highly coveted and elusive perfect 10… It’s sort of like a hole-in-one in golf, pitching a no-hitter in baseball, bowling a 300, or holding a royal flush in poker—only it’s much more rare. Like a hole-in-one, surfers will go their entire lives without reaching that double digit on a single wave. And to do it twice in a single heat? Well, that’s like winning the surf lottery. It’s so rare that it’s only been done eight times in professional surfing history. Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson, and Owen Wright have each done it twice. Without further adieu, here are the eight perfect heats in professional surfing history:

1 & 2. Owen Wright (AUS), 2015 Fiji Pro

King Wright gained superhuman status and made surf history for his performance at the Fiji Pro this year. Not only did he score two perfect 10s in a single heat, but he did it twice in the same event (once in the Quarters against Adam Melling and again in the Finals against Julian Wilson). Before yesterday, that had never been done in the history of professional surfing. It’s hard to image this happening again anytime soon. What a legend.

3. Joel Parkinson (AUS), 2013 Oakley Pro Bali

In the first heat of Round 5 of the 2013 Oakley Pro Bali, Joel Parkinson posted a pair of perfect 10s in classic, pumping Keramas… against John John Florence, no less. A major feat in anyone’s eyes, but to do it in a man-on-man heat against one of the most talented surfers on the planet had to have been icing on the cake for Joel.

4. Kelly Slater (USA), 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro

At 41, Kelly Slater scored a perfect 20 in the Quarterfinals matchup with Hawaiian Sebastian Zietz. “I wasn’t expecting to get two perfect tens,” said Slater. “I knew it was possible out there and that someone could do it. The waves just came to me and it’s all about the waves coming to you, and you riding them right, and to their full potential.”

5. Jeremy Flores (FRA), 2011 Billabong Pro Tahiti

Jeremy’s Round 5 heat with Michel Bourez during the 2011 Billabong Pro Tahiti will go down in the books. “I’ve never got a 10 in my whole ASP career,” said Jeremy. “And now I’ve got two in the same heat. Michel was late for the heat and I didn’t know what was going on. When he turned up we just seemed to go wave for wave. He got a 10 and a 9-something, and I got two 10s. He’s one of my best friends on tour and we just had the best heat together. He would have won any other heat today.”

6. Joel Parkinson (AUS), 2008 Billabong Pipe Masters

During the 2008 Billabong Pipe Masters, Joel Parkinson posted a pair of perfect 10s against Triple Crown ratings leader, Dusty Payne. This perfect heat also marks the first pair of perfect 10s in Triple Crown history since the start of the two-wave scoring format.

7. Kelly Slater (USA), 2005 Billabong Pro Tahiti

In the Finals against fellow Floridian, Damien Hobgood, Slater surfed a perfect heat and made surf history. Following Slater’s first 10, Damien took a nasty spill on a closeout, which ultimately took him out of the contest. Surfing by himself, Slater amassed another perfect score and became the first surfer in the history of the ASP to earn a perfect 20.

8. Shane Beschen (USA), 1996 Kirra Pro

Shane Beschen scored a perfect heat at Kirra in 1996 (back when they counted three scoring waves for each heat). Beschen earned a perfect 30, making him the first and only professional surfer to score three perfect 10-point rides in the same heat. Legend.

Only the best. We promise.
