Bede Durbidge came very close to dying last year at Pipeline. He, along with Owen Wright and Evan Geiselman, fell victim to a very violent winter season. After falling on a wave at Pipe, Durbidge dragged his shattered body to the surface and onto a rescue ski. On the beach, it was clear that something was very, very wrong, and doctors confirmed it. His pelvis was shattered.
After surgeons crammed him full of plates, rods, and screws, Bede began a very long, very painful road to recovery. Six months and an incredible amount of hard work later, Bede was finally able to start surfing again. His goal was to surf at Pipeline again. A few weeks ago at Haleiwa, he pulled on the jersey for the first time since his accident, then moved into Sunset. This is the story of his journey.
Above is part two of MySurf.tv’s documentation of Bede’s return. Watch part one HERE, and see more from them here.
