The Inertia

Perhaps you came across video footage earlier this month of a single session Timmy Reyes had in Mexico earlier this year that rivaled Mick Fanning’s session at The Snake, or Natxo Gonzalez’s dream wave. When the folks at Firewire posted a snippet to YouTube, they titled the clip “The Hydroshort session that nearly broke our iPhones,” referring to Reyes’ board of choice. Watching how insanely barreled Timmy gets, it’s no secret why the footage nearly claimed a few iPhones, even if it is just a figure of speech.

For the California surfer, even though parts of Mexico are by now well-worn, the place still has an allure. That just around the bend – so long as you’re in a rig with four-wheel drive – a perfect wave with nobody out exists. And when you find it, though to be fair there’s at least one other lucky surfer in Timmy’s clip – despite one’s best intentions it’s nearly impossible not to share an experience that causes one’s font of joy to runneth over.

“Word has been rumbling through Huntington Beach about this session since June when Timmy Reyes missioned to a fickle right-hander to test the Hydroshort in LFT,” explains Firewire.

“When Timmy got back, he kept the footage (shot by Isaac Zoller and John Oda) on lockdown, but began sharing stories over drinks with friends about these sessions and the shape he rode, and since then, HB has been abuzz with intrigue over this new Tomo Surfboards shape.”

Don’t get any ideas, though. Timmy ain’t disclosing the coordinates.
