Great white sharks didn’t become one of the longest reigning apex predators in history by dying easily. They’re built almost solely for survival, which has made them both some of the most amazing animals and the most terrifying. In Carlos Gauna’s latest YouTube offering, he details just a handful of the injuries he’s seen on great whites over the course of his years filming them.
“From natural injuries to man-made injuries, white sharks live a very tough life,” Gauna wrote. “One shark featured in this video has the deepest most significant dorsal fin injury I’ve seen so far.”
Some of the worst injuries occur when a shark is hit by a boat. It’s often not something the boater is even aware of, but to the shark, a propellor strike can have devastating impacts.
Aside from injuries that come from shark vs. shark battles, other dangers sharks face mostly come from us. Fishing hooks and entanglements are on the list too, but as you’ll see in this video, great whites aren’t the types to give up too easily.
