The Inertia

There are sharks in the ocean. We all know that, but when you’re surfing, it’s not exactly something you want at the front of your mind. Statistically speaking, chances of being attacked by a shark are about as low as they get, but still, the idea of it is just… horrifying. Fear versus reality is a tough thing to wrangle, though.

In the video above, Carlos Gauna, a man who spends a lot of his time flying drones around looking for sharks (like this, this, this, and this), spots a juvenile great white shark near a surf camp in Southern California. Any time a shark is near a child, it’s just a little more frightening — but it doesn’t necessarily need to be. “Although alarming,” Gauna wrote, I had the video analyzed by shark scientists. It may not be as alarming as I thought. In fact, it could be unique footage.”
