The waves in Hossegor, France, are basically the epitome of what a beachbreak should be. On its day, though, it can mete out some serious punishment. Nate Florence likes that kind of thing.
Nathan is not a guy who chases the small, mellow days. He chases the days that put his heart in his throat. The days that wear you out, both physically and mentally.
Hossegor is one of the most famous surf destinations on Earth. It’s a wonderful place, full of culture and good food and good wine. And, of course, waves. As they say in France, “tout est bon dans le cochon.”
Given the fact that it’s a beachbreak, it is a shifting lineup with giant tide swings and a huge range of swell directions. It’s interesting how it works there: an offshore trench sits off the coast, tripping up open-ocean swells before they unload onto the sand bottom. Currents run wild. The place holds well past 12-feet. The shore pound can be merciless. All that makes for an exciting day in the water, and Nate got just that.
