Jamaican surfing is underrated. There, we said it. Consistent waves are groomed by Caribbean trade winds and the passionate locals have built a strong surf culture. A lot of that is thanks to Billy “Mystic” Wilmot who helped create that culture on the island, including Jamaica’s only surf camp, Jamnesia.
On a recent trip, Dane Gudauskas met up with Wilmot’s son Ivah Wilmot. They scored an absolutely pumping overhead session alongside Shama Beckford, “one of Jamaica’s first true pro surfers,” as well as local up-and-comer Ronald Hastings. It was truly a gem of a paddle out, as you’ll witness above.
