The Right isn’t a wave to surf casually. There are no days there that are knee-high and chill. No hordes lying beneath umbrellas with coolers on the beach while children splash around on the inside. The Right is a wave reserved for slab hunters who want to feel their hearts beating out of their chests. Surfers who may have a few loose screws. And Matt Dunsmore falls into the category.
On March 1, Dunsmore locked into a wild one in Western Australia. Short but sweet, as waves tend to be at The Right, and Tim Bonython was there with his camera pointed in the right direction. Now, the footage has been entered into the 2025-2026 Big Wave Challenge, an online event that tackles the problem of getting the masses interested in big wave events without making them sit through the inevitable long lulls.
